It has been difficult to write about small business in Panama because I haven’t found many resources to check out locally.  Looking at the advertisements I found touting booming business in Panama on the internet, it seems this is the place to come, hang out your shingle and get to work.  Slow down…not so fast.

Panama is growing fast, particularly if you are in real estate ventures.  There are building sprouting up all over the place.  Here in El Cangrejo, I am surrounded by three towers that are under construction.  So, if real estate is your game, take a look at Panama.

However, in other areas the scene isn’t so bright.  Panama government, in its efforts to make sure Panamanians get their slice of pie, has cumbersome procedures and laws that make starting a business unattractive for some. 

Successful business models have a hard time taking root here.  It is said that a small infraction may well keep you unproductive for months, if you are a foreigner.  However, locals can get away with almost any breech and it is all but erased.  For issues like these, foreign investors had better ‘cross the I’s and dot the T’s if they want to flourish here.

According to a blog called ThePanamaReport.com, Panama needs to improve basic business practices that are offered by outsiders but will work for Panama.  This is an interesting report and I will bring myself up to speed using this site and others that I find informative.

I have not decided to test the tropical business waters here.  I am looking just looking around for now.  However, if what The PanamaReport.com says is true, I will have to lay a solid foundation before I jump in.
